A word called to me a few days ago as if we were good friends. It was not unfamiliar. I felt comfortable and at home with it, although I could not actually describe it's meaning.
As far as a one word translation - steadfastness or perseverance - both good words I already know and like. However I instinctively knew there had to be much more depth to the idea and concept of sumud, that I needed to get to know and become friends with "sumud".
Sumud is an Arabic word that embodies the concept of everyday resistance. One of non-violent collective and personal resilience, maintaining of dignity, identity, and connection regardless of circumstances - even in oppression.
It was easy for me understand sumud as a struggle in the form of a verb exemplified by Palestinians in their resistance against the Israeli occupation - something as basic as living where one belongs. Sumud as a noun is the solid structure and framework of their resistance.
"Sumud, for Palestinians, is a core cultural and national concept. One that means more than steadfastness, perseverance - also staying strong in all possible ways."
"The profound term has deep and well-established roots for Palestinians and their land, reflecting their strength and perseverance as a nation and culture." And that is why I have become fast friends with sumud. It is a concept I already knew because it describes a people I have long known who personify it.
My initial acquaintance with sumud tells me it is a steadfast way of resistance. A way that embodies and projects a deep sense of peace and quiet strength it is a joy to behold and embody. I know it well as a concept at the foundation of Palestine and the beauty of Palestinian culture.

*My thoughts inspired by "Sumud and Palestine" at Islamic Relief of Australia website. A very fitting introduction to sumud. I am grateful for the introduction through their words and my use of many of them as I to take my new friend to heart.
